This old fashioned Blueberry Cobbler is an easy and delicious dessert featuring sweet, juicy blueberries coated with a crunchy, buttery batter. Perfectly baked to golden brown, it’s best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped topping, making it a comforting treat using simple ingredients you likely already have on hand.

Ingredients

Blueberry Mixture

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1-2 teaspoons lemon zest

Batter

  • 1 1/8 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat and melt butter: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Cut the unsalted butter into cubes and place them in a 9×13 inch baking pan. Put the pan in the oven to melt the butter evenly while you prepare the other ingredients.
  2. Mix blueberries and sugars: In a medium bowl, combine the blueberries, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and lemon zest. Stir gently until the blueberries are well coated with the sugar mixture, ensuring an even sweet flavor.
  3. Prepare the batter: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Make a well in the center, then add the milk and vanilla extract. Whisk until the batter becomes smooth and lump-free.
  4. Layer the cobbler: Remove the melted butter from the oven. Pour the sweetened blueberries evenly over the melted butter in the baking pan. Carefully pour the batter over the blueberries, distributing it evenly in the center and around the edges to cover the fruit.
  5. Sprinkle cinnamon: Lightly sprinkle cinnamon on top of the batter for added warmth and flavor.
  6. Bake: Bake the cobbler in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. If you are using frozen blueberries, increase the baking time by an additional 10 to 15 minutes to account for extra moisture.
  7. Rest and serve: Remove the baked cobbler from the oven and allow it to cool at room temperature for about 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped topping for the best experience.

Notes

  • Use fresh, firm, and ripe blueberries for the best texture and flavor. Avoid overripe fruit to prevent a runny filling.
  • If your blueberries taste sour, increase the sugar in the filling to balance the flavor.
  • Frozen blueberries can be used, but they release more juice, potentially making the filling runnier; adjust baking time accordingly.
  • Serving the cobbler warm with ice cream enhances the sweetness and contrast of textures.
