A classic Italian Caprese Salad featuring ripe tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil, drizzled with a homemade balsamic reduction and olive oil dressing. This refreshing and simple salad is perfect for a quick appetizer or light meal.

Ingredients

Salad

  • 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, sliced, torn, or cut into bite-sized pieces
  • pounds ripe tomatoes, sliced, or cut into bite-sized pieces
  • ¼ cup fresh basil leaves
  • Flaky salt, to taste
  • Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste

Balsamic Reduction & Dressing

  • ⅓ cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

Instructions

  1. Arrange the tomatoes and cheese: On a large serving platter, arrange the fresh mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, and basil leaves, alternating and overlapping them as desired to create an attractive presentation.
  2. Make the balsamic reduction: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the balsamic vinegar and brown sugar. Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture has reduced by half and thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 6 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool for 10 minutes.
  3. Prepare the salad dressing: Transfer the cooled balsamic reduction to a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Add the minced garlic and pour in the extra-virgin olive oil. Seal the lid and shake vigorously until the dressing emulsifies. Alternatively, whisk together the balsamic reduction, garlic, and olive oil in a bowl until well combined.
  4. Dress the salad: Drizzle the prepared dressing over the arranged salad evenly.
  5. Season and serve: Sprinkle flaky salt and freshly cracked black pepper over the salad to taste, then serve immediately to enjoy its fresh flavors.

Notes

  • Use the freshest mozzarella and ripe tomatoes for the best flavor and texture.
  • The balsamic reduction can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • If you prefer, substitute the brown sugar with honey for a different sweetness profile.
  • Serve this salad immediately after dressing to maintain freshness and texture.
  • For a more substantial dish, add some crusty bread or serve alongside grilled meats or vegetables.
