A comforting and creamy cheesy potato bake that layers thinly sliced potatoes with a garlic-infused creamy sauce and melted cheese, baked to golden perfection. Perfect as a hearty side dish or a satisfying main course.

Ingredients

Potatoes

  • 1 kg potatoes, peeled

Dairy

  • 100 g cheese, grated (cheddar or similar)
  • 1.5 cups cream and/or milk

Flavorings

  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, crushed
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F) to ensure it is ready when your potato layers are prepared.
  2. Slice Potatoes: Thinly slice the peeled potatoes using a sharp knife or mandoline for even cooking and layering.
  3. Prepare Cream Mixture: In a bowl, mix the cream and/or milk with the crushed garlic. Season generously with salt and black pepper to enhance the flavor.
  4. Layer Potatoes and Cheese: In a greased ovenproof dish, place a thin layer of potato slices on the bottom. Sprinkle a portion of the grated cheese over the potatoes. Dollop some of the garlic cream mixture on top of the cheese.
  5. Repeat Layers: Continue layering potatoes, cheese, and cream mixture until all the potatoes are used, finishing with a cheese topping for a browned crust.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 80 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork and the top is golden and bubbling.

Notes

  • Use a firm cheese that melts well like cheddar or gruyere for best results.
  • Adjust the amount of salt and pepper according to taste during mixing of the cream.
  • If you prefer a lighter dish, use milk instead of cream, or a mix of both as suggested.
  • The thin slicing of potatoes is essential to ensure they cook evenly within the 80 minutes baking time.
  • Let the dish rest for 5-10 minutes after baking before serving to allow it to set slightly.
