Chocolatey Football Muddy Buddies, also known as Puppy Chow, are a delicious, crunchy, and chocolate-coated snack made with crispy cereal, melted chocolate, Nutella, and a dusting of cocoa powder and powdered sugar. Perfectly festive with green and brown M&Ms and football sprinkles, this easy no-bake treat is ideal for game days, parties, or anytime you crave a sweet, chocolatey snack.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 6 cups rice or corn cereal, like Chex (200 grams)
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips (200 grams)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature, cut into cubes (60 grams)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate hazelnut spread, like Nutella (150 grams)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt (Diamond recommended)

Coating Mix

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (180 grams), more as needed
  • 1/3 cup Dutch process cocoa powder (30 grams)

Decorations

  • Green and brown M&Ms, peanut or regular (about 1 cup or 200 grams)
  • Football sprinkles, for decoration

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cereal: Pour the rice or corn cereal into a large mixing bowl and set aside for later.
  2. Melt the Chocolate Mixture: Fill a pot with 1-2 inches of water and bring to a gentle simmer. Place semisweet chocolate chips, unsalted butter cubes, Nutella, and Kosher salt into a heatproof bowl, then set it over the simmering water, making sure the water does not touch the bottom of the bowl. Stir constantly until the chocolate mixture is smooth and fully melted but thick.
  3. Combine Chocolate and Cereal: Remove the bowl from heat and immediately pour the chocolate mixture over the cereal. Gently stir with a rubber spatula until all the cereal is completely coated and any large clumps are broken up. Let the mixture cool for about 5 minutes.
  4. Coat with Sugar and Cocoa: Transfer the coated cereal to a large zipper bag. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and Dutch process cocoa powder. Pour half of the mixture into the bag, seal it, and shake vigorously until the cereal is well coated. Break up any large chunks by hand. Repeat with the remaining powdered sugar-cocoa mix.
  5. Set and Decorate: Spread the coated muddy buddies onto a large sheet pan and let them set completely for 20-30 minutes. Once set, stir in green and brown M&Ms along with football sprinkles eyeballing the quantity to taste.
  6. Store: Place the muddy buddies in an airtight container where they will keep fresh for 2-3 weeks.

Notes

  • Swap Nutella for creamy peanut butter or a nut-free chocolate spread like Sunbutter or chocolate soy butter if needed.
  • If using Morton Kosher salt, reduce the amount to 1/4 teaspoon.
  • The chocolate-Nutella mixture will be thick—using disposable gloves to mix can make the process easier.
  • Avoid overheating the chocolate mixture to prevent it from seizing and becoming grainy.
  • If the muddy buddies remain sticky after coating, add extra powdered sugar in 1/4 cup increments.
  • Add about 1 cup (200 grams) of M&Ms or adjust to your preference for decoration and taste.
