A classic and comforting breakfast recipe, Cinnamon French Toast features slices of bread soaked in a creamy, cinnamon-spiced custard, then cooked to golden perfection in butter. Served with maple syrup or fresh fruit, this easy-to-make dish is perfect for weekend mornings or special occasions.

Ingredients

Custard Mixture

  • 6-8 slices dry bread (preferably thick cut brioche or sandwich bread)
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

For Cooking

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

For Serving

  • Maple syrup, as desired

Instructions

  1. Prepare the custard mixture: In a shallow dish, whisk together whole milk, eggs, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until well combined and smooth.
  2. Preheat the skillet: Place a nonstick skillet over medium to medium-low heat. Add 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter and allow it to melt completely, coating the surface evenly.
  3. Soak the bread slices: Dip 3 slices of bread into the custard mixture one at a time. Coat one side thoroughly, flip to coat the other side, then lift and gently shake off any excess custard.
  4. Cook the bread: Arrange the soaked bread slices in the preheated skillet in a single layer. Cook until the underside is golden brown and crisp, then flip to cook the other side. If the bread browns too quickly, reduce the heat slightly to ensure the center cooks through without burning.
  5. Keep warm and repeat: Transfer cooked French toast to a plate and lightly cover to keep warm. Repeat the soaking and cooking process with remaining bread slices, adding the remaining tablespoon of butter to the skillet as needed.
  6. Serve: Serve the warm cinnamon French toast with maple syrup, a dusting of confectioner’s sugar, or fresh fruit as desired.

Notes

  • Drying bread: To achieve the perfect texture, dry out your bread by baking it at 285°F for up to 10 minutes on a wire rack or letting it sit out overnight. Lightly toasting works too, but avoid browning the bread before soaking.
  • Bread choice: Thick cut brioche is ideal for rich and tender French toast, though any sandwich bread can be used depending on your preference and availability.
  • Storage: Store leftover French toast in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in a skillet or oven at 350°F until warmed through.
  • Milk alternatives: Whole milk gives the creamiest custard, but you can substitute any milk, including dairy-free alternatives.
