This Classic Apple Crumble recipe combines tart Granny Smith apples simmered with warming spices and topped with a crisp, buttery oat crumble. Baked to golden perfection, it’s a comforting dessert perfect for serving warm with custard, cream, or ice cream.

Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 5-6 Granny Smith apples (750g peeled and chopped)
  • 2 Tbsp water
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup white sugar

Crumble Topping

  • 100g butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (100g)
  • 1 1/2 cup rolled oats (160g)
  • 3/4 cup plain flour (110g)
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp mixed spice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples: Peel the Granny Smith apples and chop them into 1 cm wide pieces. Preheat your oven to 180°C on fan bake setting.
  2. Simmer the apple mixture: In a medium saucepan, combine the chopped apples, water, half of the white sugar, ground cloves, and lemon juice. Heat over medium heat until it gently simmers, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  3. Cook until tender: Add the remaining white sugar if more sweetness is desired. Continue cooking for 5 to 10 minutes until the apples soften but still hold their shape. Remove the pan from heat once done.
  4. Make the crumble topping: In a mixing bowl, combine the melted butter with the brown sugar. Add the rolled oats, plain flour, ground cinnamon, and mixed spice. Mix thoroughly to create the crumble mixture.
  5. Assemble the crumble: Pour the softened apple mixture into a baking dish. Sprinkle the oat crumble topping evenly over the apples, breaking it up slightly with your fingertips for a crumbly texture.
  6. Bake the crumble: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes or until the crumble topping is crisp and golden brown.
  7. Serve: Remove from the oven and serve warm. This apple crumble is delicious paired with hot custard, fresh cream, or ice cream for an indulgent treat.

Notes

  • Choose Granny Smith apples for their tartness which balances the sweetness of the crumble topping.
  • Adjust sugar amounts based on your preferred level of sweetness.
  • Ensure apples are soft but still hold their shape to avoid a mushy filling.
  • If you don’t have mixed spice, a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice can be used.
  • For extra crunch, you can add chopped nuts to the crumble topping.
  • Serve immediately for best texture, but leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheated.
