Ingredients

For the Sushi Rolls

  • 3-4 cups cooked sushi rice
  • 2 ripe avocados, thickly sliced
  • 6-8 nori sheets

For Serving

  • Sesame seeds (optional)
  • Pickled ginger
  • Wasabi
  • Soy sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sushi Rice: First, prepare a batch of sushi rice according to your preferred method or package instructions. Allow the rice to cool completely to room temperature before assembling the rolls to ensure it sticks well without being too hot.
  2. Prepare the Sushi Mat: Cover a sushi rolling mat with cling wrap or a reusable freezer bag to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  3. Prepare Avocado Maki: Place one nori sheet shiny side down on the covered sushi mat. Using a rice paddle, scoop ½ to ⅔ cup of cooled sushi rice onto the nori. Wet your fingers with a small bowl of water to prevent sticking, then gently spread the rice evenly over the nori, leaving about a ½-inch space at the edge farthest from you.
  4. Add Avocado Fillings: Arrange a line of thick avocado slices evenly in the center of the rice layer.
  5. Roll the Sushi: Starting from the edge nearest you, carefully roll the sushi mat over the avocado filling, applying firm but gentle pressure to shape a tight cylindrical roll. Lift the edge of the mat and continue rolling forward, pressing again to maintain the shape until the entire sheet is rolled up.
  6. Prepare Avocado Uramaki (Inside-Out Roll): For this variation, place the nori sheet on the covered sushi mat and spread the sushi rice evenly over the entire surface of the nori sheet, wetting your fingers to avoid sticking. Flip the sheet carefully so the nori is facing up.
  7. Add Avocado Filling to Uramaki: Lay a line of avocado slices along the center of the nori side.
  8. Roll the Uramaki: Roll the sushi mat over the filling and press firmly as before to form a tight roll. Continue rolling until complete.
  9. Add Sesame Seeds: Lightly sprinkle sesame seeds on the outside layer of rice of the uramaki roll as an optional garnish.
  10. Slice and Serve: Using a sharp, wet knife, slice each roll into 6-8 equal pieces. Serve immediately alongside pickled ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce for dipping. Enjoy your fresh homemade avocado sushi rolls!

Notes

  • Make sure to cool the sushi rice to room temperature before rolling to ensure the texture is perfect.
  • Wet your fingers and knife before handling rice to prevent sticking.
  • Use ripe but firm avocados to avoid mushy rolls.
  • Adjust the amount of rice on each sheet depending on your preferred thickness and roll size.
  • For best results, consume sushi rolls immediately after slicing.
  • If desired, add other fillings like cucumber or crab meat to customize your rolls.
