These savory and herby edamame fritters are paired with a spicy soy dipping sauce, making them perfect as an appetizer, a side dish, or a light lunch. The fritters are made from tender edamame beans blended into a flavorful batter, fried to a crisp golden brown, and served with a tangy, spicy sauce to add a burst of flavor.

Ingredients

For the Dipping Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili crisp
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 teaspoons rice wine vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha

For the Edamame Fritters

  • 1 pound frozen edamame beans
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon garlic granules
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dipping Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, chili crisp, honey, rice wine vinegar, toasted sesame oil, and sriracha. Mix well and set aside until ready to serve.
  2. Cook the Edamame: Bring a pot of water to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Add the frozen edamame beans and cook for 20 to 25 minutes until they are very tender.
  3. Drain and Process Edamame: Thoroughly drain the cooked edamame beans. Transfer them to a food processor and blend until a smooth paste forms.
  4. Make the Fritter Batter: Place the edamame paste in a mixing bowl. Add the egg, all-purpose flour, chopped cilantro, chives, garlic granules, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything well to form a consistent batter.
  5. Heat the Pan: Heat a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil.
  6. Cook the Fritters: Using heaping tablespoons, dollop the batter into the hot pan. Spread the batter slightly to form circular fritters. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes on one side until crisp and golden brown.
  7. Flip and Cook Other Side: Carefully flip the fritters and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes until golden and cooked through.
  8. Repeat Frying: Remove the cooked fritters from the pan. Add more vegetable oil if needed and continue frying the remaining batter in batches until all fritters are cooked.
  9. Serve: Serve the fritters warm alongside the prepared spicy soy dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Make sure the edamame beans are very tender before blending to ensure smooth batter.
  • Use a non-stick skillet to prevent fritters from sticking and to require less oil.
  • Adjust the spiciness of the dipping sauce by varying the amount of chili crisp and sriracha to taste.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
  • The fritters can be kept warm in a low oven while cooking the remaining batches.
