Ingredients

Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup low-sodium soy sauce or tamari
  • 3 tablespoons beef broth
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 (1-inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled and minced
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • Dash of crushed red pepper flakes

Vegetables and Meat

  • 1 head broccoli, cut into florets (about 4 cups)
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil or olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 yellow onion, chopped
  • Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste

Garnish and Serving

  • Sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Sliced green onions, for garnish
  • Cooked rice or noodles, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce: In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, beef broth, minced garlic, honey, rice wine vinegar, cornstarch, grated ginger, toasted sesame oil, and crushed red pepper flakes until smooth. Set the sauce mixture aside.
  2. Steam the broccoli: Place the broccoli florets and water in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cover with a lid and steam for about 4 to 5 minutes until the broccoli turns bright green and is just tender. Remove the broccoli from the skillet and set aside on a plate.
  3. Cook the ground beef and onion: Using the same skillet, heat the avocado or olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and chopped onion, cooking while breaking up the beef with a spoon, until the beef is nicely browned and no longer pink, about 5 to 7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  4. Simmer with sauce and combine with broccoli: Reduce the skillet heat to low and pour the prepared sauce over the cooked beef mixture. Stir occasionally and cook for a few minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the meat evenly. Add the steamed broccoli back to the skillet and stir everything together until well combined and heated through.
  5. Garnish and serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Sprinkle the dish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions as garnish. Serve hot over cooked rice or noodles for a complete meal.
