A delightful twist on the classic tiramisu, this Hot Cross Bun Tiramisu layers coffee-soaked hot cross buns with a luscious mascarpone and whipped cream mixture, dusted with cocoa powder. Perfectly creamy and richly flavored, it makes a unique dessert to enjoy during festive seasons or any time you crave a comforting treat.

Ingredients

Cream Mixture

  • 350ml cream
  • 500g mascarpone cheese
  • 2 tsp vanilla essence
  • ½ cup caster sugar

Base and Soaking Liquid

  • 6 hot cross buns
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1¼ cups black coffee
  • 1 Tbsp liqueur (optional)

Topping

  • 12 Tbsp cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Whip the cream: Whip the 350ml cream until soft peaks form, ensuring a light and airy texture for the cream mixture.
  2. Combine mascarpone and sugar: Add 500g mascarpone cheese, 2 tsp vanilla essence, and ½ cup caster sugar to the whipped cream. Continue whipping until stiff peaks form, creating a rich and creamy filling.
  3. Slice hot cross buns: Cut the 6 hot cross buns into 1cm thick slices to prepare for soaking.
  4. Prepare coffee mixture: Mix 2 Tbsp sugar, 1¼ cups black coffee, and 1 Tbsp liqueur (if using) to make the soaking liquid that will infuse the buns with flavor.
  5. Soak and layer buns: Quickly dip the sliced hot cross buns into the coffee mixture, then arrange a layer at the base of your serving dish.
  6. Spread cream mixture: Evenly spread half of the cream mixture over the soaked buns to create the first creamy layer.
  7. Add second bun layer: Dip the remaining hot cross bun slices in the coffee mixture and layer them on top of the cream, followed by the remaining cream spread and smoothing out the top.
  8. Create cross pattern and dust: Place strips of paper on the surface in a cross pattern reminiscent of hot cross buns, then dust 1–2 Tbsp cocoa powder over the top.
  9. Chill: Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or preferably overnight to allow flavors to meld and the dessert to set. Serve chilled.

Notes

  • For a non-alcoholic version, omit the liqueur from the coffee mixture.
  • Use strong brewed coffee for best flavor infusion.
  • Ensure not to soak the buns for too long to prevent them from becoming too soggy.
  • Overnight chilling enhances the flavor and texture.
  • Use strips of baking paper or parchment paper to create the cocoa powder cross design.
  • Serve chilled for optimal taste and texture.
