These Monte Cristo Sliders are a delicious twist on the classic sandwich, featuring layers of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese on soft Hawaiian rolls, baked to golden perfection with a buttery egg wash. Finished with a dusting of powdered sugar and served with sweet berry preserves, these sliders blend savory and sweet flavors for a perfect appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

Sandwich Ingredients

  • 12 Hawaiian Rolls (one package)
  • 12 slices sliced deli ham
  • 12 slices sliced deli turkey
  • 6 slices baby Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (more or less to taste)

Topping and Serving

  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup butter (melted)
  • Powdered sugar (for topping)
  • Strawberry or blackberry preserves (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease an 11-inch rectangular baking dish with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the Rolls: Using a large serrated knife, slice the entire package of rolls in half horizontally to create a connected top and bottom slab. Do not separate individual rolls to keep them connected. Spread Dijon mustard evenly over both the top and bottom slabs.
  3. Layer the Ingredients: On the bottom slab, arrange half of the Swiss cheese slices, then layer all the ham slices, followed by all the turkey slices, and finally the remaining Swiss cheese slices on top.
  4. Assemble the Sandwich: Replace the top slab of rolls over the layered ingredients, forming the complete sandwich slab again.
  5. Apply Egg Butter Wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter and large egg. Use a pastry brush to apply this mixture evenly over the top of the roll slab to create a golden crust during baking.
  6. Cover and Bake: Loosely cover the baking dish with foil; to prevent the foil from sticking to the bread, use toothpicks inserted into the bread to lift the foil slightly. Bake the sandwich in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.
  7. Brown the Top: Remove the foil carefully and continue baking for another 10 minutes or until the tops of the rolls are nicely golden brown and slightly crisp.
  8. Serve: Allow the sliders to cool slightly, then carefully cut them apart with a sharp knife into individual servings. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top if desired and serve warm with strawberry or blackberry preserves on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Maintaining the rolls connected as slabs ensures even layering and easier slicing after baking.
  • Use toothpicks to lift foil and prevent sticking during baking.
  • Adjust Dijon mustard amount to suit your taste preference.
  • Warm the preserves slightly if desired for easier dipping.
  • For a crispier crust, broil the sliders for 1-2 minutes at the end of baking, watching carefully to avoid burning.
