These Pepperoni and Cheese Calzones are perfect handheld pizzas with a crispy golden crust filled with flavorful pepperoni, melted mozzarella cheese, and rich tomato sauce, baked to perfection for a delicious Italian-inspired meal.

Ingredients

Calzone Dough

  • 500g pizza dough

Filling

  • 100g pepperoni slices
  • 160g mozzarella cheese, grated
  • 4 Tbsp pizza sauce

Finishing

  • 1 tsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 210°C (fan bake) to ensure it is hot and ready for baking the calzones.
  2. Divide the dough: Separate the pizza dough into 4 equal-sized balls for individual calzones.
  3. Roll out the dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll one dough ball into a 20 cm diameter circle.
  4. Add sauce: Spread 1 tablespoon of pizza sauce on one half of the dough circle, leaving a 2 cm border free around the edges to seal later.
  5. Add toppings: Place 4 slices of pepperoni over the sauce, then sprinkle approximately 40g of grated mozzarella cheese over them.
  6. Seal the calzone: Fold the uncovered half of the dough over the toppings, creating a semi-circle. Press the edges firmly to seal, then fold and twist the edge to secure the filling.
  7. Repeat: Repeat the rolling, filling, and sealing with the remaining dough balls and toppings to make all four calzones.
  8. Prepare for baking: Place the calzones on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Cut two small vents on top of each calzone to allow steam to escape during baking.
  9. Brush with olive oil: Lightly brush the tops of each calzone with olive oil to help achieve a golden, crispy crust.
  10. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the calzones turn golden brown and the cheese inside is melted and bubbling.

Notes

  • Make sure not to overfill the calzones to prevent dough from bursting during baking.
  • Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to make vents, which helps avoid soggy calzones.
  • If you prefer, substitute pepperoni with other cured meats or vegetables for variety.
  • Allow calzones to cool for a few minutes before serving to avoid burns from hot filling.
  • For a crispier crust, you can preheat the baking tray before placing calzones on it.
