This Skillet Caramel Apple Crisp is a perfect cozy dessert for sweater weather. Featuring tender yet slightly crisp apples baked beneath a golden, buttery crumb topping, this recipe balances the sweet caramel flavors with warm cinnamon spice. Prepared in a cast iron skillet, it’s easy to make and perfect to serve with vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent touch.

Ingredients

Apples

  • 5 cups apples, peeled, cored and sliced

Apple Coating

  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Crumb Topping

  • ⅔ cup melted butter (soft but not fully melted)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup flour

Other

  • 3 tablespoons butter (for skillet)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and place a rack in the center position to ensure even baking.
  2. Prepare the Apples: In a medium mixing bowl, add the peeled, cored, and sliced apples. Sprinkle with ⅓ cup brown sugar and ½ teaspoon cinnamon. Toss the apples well to coat them evenly with the sugar and cinnamon mixture.
  3. Prepare the Skillet: Thinly slice 3 tablespoons of butter and place the slices at the bottom of a 12-inch cast iron skillet. Arrange the coated apples evenly over the butter in the skillet.
  4. Make the Crumb Topping: Heat the remaining ⅔ cup butter until very soft but not completely melted, using a microwave or a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Pour the softened butter into the same mixing bowl you used for the apples. Add the remaining 1 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1 cup flour. Use your hands to mix the ingredients thoroughly until a loose dough forms.
  5. Assemble and Bake: Crumble the crumb topping evenly over the apples in the skillet. Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown, the apples are tender yet slightly firm, and the caramel sauce bubbles around the edges.
  6. Cool and Serve: Remove the skillet from the oven and allow the apple crisp to cool for 15 minutes to thicken the caramel. Serve warm, ideally topped with vanilla ice cream for added richness and contrast.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best balance of sweet and tart flavors that hold their shape well during baking.
  • Ensure the butter for the topping is very soft but not melted entirely to achieve the perfect crumb texture.
  • This dessert tastes best warm and freshly baked but can be refrigerated and gently reheated.
  • For a nuttier crisp topping, consider adding chopped pecans or walnuts.
  • Vanilla ice cream is optional but enhances the dessert wonderfully with creamy contrast.
