This Spicy Baked Feta, inspired by the classic Greek dish Mpougiourdi, combines creamy feta cheese with cherry tomatoes, green chili peppers, oregano, and olive oil. Baked to perfection, it makes a flavorful appetizer that’s perfect for dipping with crusty bread or crackers.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 150 grams block Feta cheese (about 5-6 oz)
  • 2 green chili peppers
  • ¾ cup halved cherry tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the ingredients evenly and thoroughly.
  2. Prepare Feta: Cut the block of feta cheese into cubes and place them in a small baking dish suitable for oven use.
  3. Chop Chilies: Finely chop one of the green chili peppers. If you prefer less heat, remove the seeds before chopping. Reserve the other chili pepper for garnishing the top of the dish after baking.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Add the halved cherry tomatoes, chopped chilies, olive oil, and dried oregano into the baking dish with the feta. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, adjusting seasoning based on the feta’s saltiness.
  5. Bake: Cover the baking dish and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the feta and tomatoes are softened and fragrant.
  6. Serve: Once baked, you can leave the mixture as is or lightly mash it together. Garnish with the reserved green chili pepper slices and serve warm alongside toasted baguette, breadsticks, or crackers for dipping.

Notes

  • Adjust chili pepper seeds to control the heat level of the dish.
  • Use a baking dish that fits the feta snugly to prevent drying out.
  • Baking time may vary slightly depending on oven performance; watch for softened tomatoes and feta.
  • This dish pairs wonderfully with crusty bread or assorted crackers for dipping.
  • For a less spicy version, remove all seeds or substitute with milder peppers.
