This Traeger Dessert Smoked Apples recipe offers a delightful smoky twist on a classic dessert perfect for BBQ parties. Made with fresh gala apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and crunchy walnuts, these smoked apples are tender with a bit of bite, enhanced by the subtle smokiness from the pellet grill. Served warm with optional vanilla ice cream, this dessert combines comforting flavors and smoky aroma for an unforgettable treat.

Ingredients

Apples and Toppings

  • 5 medium gala apples, halved lengthwise and cores removed
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp salted butter, melted
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ cup raisins or cranberries
  • 2 tbsp walnuts, crushed

Optional Serving

  • 2 cups vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat Smoker: Preheat your pellet grill or smoker, such as a Traeger or Pitt Boss, to a temperature between 225°F and 250°F. The recipe video smoked the apples at 250°F for slightly faster cooking.
  2. Prepare Apples: Halve and core the gala apples, then arrange them cut side up in a baking dish or cast iron skillet. Evenly sprinkle the apples with brown sugar, drizzle the melted butter over them, and then add a pinch of cinnamon, raisins or cranberries, and crushed walnuts on top.
  3. Smoke the Apples: Place the baking dish with prepared apples inside the preheated smoker. Smoke at 250°F for approximately 60 to 90 minutes until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork but still retain some firmness — not completely mushy.
  4. Serve and Enjoy: Remove the smoked apples from the grill and allow them to cool slightly. Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream for a creamy contrast to the smoky and sweet flavors.

Notes

  • You can use any variety of apples, but gala is suggested for its sweetness and texture.
  • Adjust the smoking time between 60 to 90 minutes depending on how soft you prefer your apples.
  • Adding walnuts gives a nice crunch that contrasts with the soft smoked apples.
  • Serve immediately with ice cream, as it melts beautifully on the warm apples.
  • If you don’t have a pellet grill, a conventional smoker or a charcoal grill set up for indirect smoking at low temperature can be used.
