Agua de Jamaica is a refreshing Mexican hibiscus tea made by steeping dried hibiscus flowers in boiling water, sweetened with sugar, and served chilled over ice. This vibrant, tart beverage is perfect for cooling down on warm days and can be garnished with mint or lime for added flavor.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried hibiscus flowers
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 6 cups water
  • Ice cubes, as needed
  • Fresh mint leaves (optional)
  • Lime slices (optional)

Instructions

  1. Boil Water: Bring 6 cups of water to a boil in a pot on the stovetop.
  2. Steep Hibiscus Flowers: Add 2 cups of dried hibiscus flowers to the boiling water, cover tightly with a lid, then remove from heat and let steep for 10 minutes to infuse the flavors.
  3. Strain Tea: Strain the hibiscus-infused water into a pitcher, discarding the used flowers to leave a vibrant red liquid.
  4. Sweeten Tea: Stir in 3/4 cup of granulated sugar until fully dissolved. Adjust sweetness according to your preference.
  5. Chill: Refrigerate the tea until cold, allowing the flavors to meld and the drink to be refreshing.
  6. Serve: Taste the tea and add more sugar or dilute with water if desired. Pour over tall glasses filled with ice cubes, and garnish with fresh mint leaves or lime slices, if using.

Notes

  • You can adjust the sugar amount to make the tea sweeter or more tart according to your taste.
  • Straining well ensures a smooth, flower-free drink.
  • Adding fresh mint or lime complements the tartness of the hibiscus beautifully.
  • Hibiscus tea can be served warm if preferred; just skip refrigeration.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
