These Apple Fritters are a delightful treat featuring tender bits of granny apples mixed into a spiced batter, fried to golden perfection, and drizzled with a flavorful apple cider glaze. Crispy on the outside and soft inside, they make a perfect sweet snack or dessert for any occasion.

Ingredients

Fritter Batter

  • 2 granny apples (peeled, cored, and cut into 1/4-inch pieces)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¾ cup apple cider
  • 2 large eggs (lightly beaten)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Apple Cider Glaze

  • 2 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • ¼ cup apple cider
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients and Apples: In a large bowl, whisk together all dry ingredients including the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir in the prepared apple pieces to coat them evenly with the dry mix.
  2. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the apple cider, lightly beaten eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well blended. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and whisk gently until just combined into a batter.
  3. Heat Oil and Fry Fritters: Heat 3 cups of vegetable oil in a dutch oven over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F to 375°F. Using a 1/3-cup measure, carefully transfer 5 heaping portions of batter into the hot oil. Lightly press the batter with the back of a spoon to flatten slightly. Fry each fritter for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until they turn golden brown. Remove fried fritters and drain on a wire rack set over a rimmed baking sheet or on paper towels. Maintain the oil temperature and repeat the frying process with the remaining batter. Let the fritters cool for 5 minutes.
  4. Prepare Glaze and Serve: Whisk together confectioners’ sugar, apple cider, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a medium bowl until smooth. Spoon the glaze over the slightly cooled fritters and allow it to set for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use a candy or deep-fry thermometer to maintain the proper oil temperature for even frying.
  • Make sure not to overmix the batter to keep fritters light and fluffy.
  • Drain fritters well to avoid sogginess before glazing.
  • The apple cider glaze can be adjusted in thickness by adding more confectioners’ sugar or cider as desired.
  • Serve fritters fresh for best taste and texture.
