This vibrant Basil Lemon Zest Butter combines fragrant fresh basil, zesty lemon, and garlic into creamy unsalted butter. It’s an easy and flavorful compound butter perfect for spreading on warm bread, melting over grilled vegetables, or enhancing meats and seafood with a fresh herbaceous twist.

Ingredients

Butter Base

  • 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter, softened

Flavorings

  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves, loosely packed
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1/2 teaspoon flaky sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest

Instructions

  1. Prepare the basil: Finely chop the fresh basil leaves by hand or pulse them briefly in a food processor until they are finely minced to release their aroma.
  2. Mix the butter and flavorings: In a bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter with the chopped basil, crushed garlic clove, flaky sea salt, and grated lemon zest. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are fully incorporated and the butter is evenly green and speckled with zest and herbs.
  3. Shape and chill the butter: Spoon the mixture onto parchment paper or plastic wrap. Roll it into a log shape and twist the ends tightly to seal. Refrigerate until firm, which usually takes a few hours, or store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 3 months for longer storage.

Notes

  • Use softened butter for easier mixing and better texture.
  • Adjust lemon zest quantity to taste for more or less citrus flavor.
  • The butter freezes well and can be sliced off the log as needed.
  • Great for enhancing grilled dishes, vegetables, fish, or spreading on fresh bread.
  • Ensure basil is fresh for the best flavor and vibrant color.
