This refreshing Blood Orange Gin Cocktail combines the vibrant flavors of fresh blood orange juice with aromatic rosemary and crisp gin, sweetened with a homemade blood orange simple syrup and balanced by a splash of lime and club soda. Perfect for a bright, citrusy drink that’s both elegant and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

Simple Syrup

  • 1 cup fresh blood orange juice (from 3-4 large blood oranges)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 sprigs rosemary

Cocktail

  • 4 oz gin
  • 2 oz blood orange simple syrup
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • splash of club soda
  • Ice cubes
  • Rosemary sprig and blood orange slice for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Blood Orange Simple Syrup: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, fresh blood orange juice, and rosemary sprigs. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and stir continuously until the sugar is fully dissolved, creating a fragrant syrup.
  2. Strain and Cool Syrup: Remove the saucepan from heat and strain the syrup through a fine-mesh sieve to remove rosemary sprigs and any pulp. Allow the syrup to cool completely before use.
  3. Mix Cocktail Ingredients: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Add gin, cooled blood orange simple syrup, and fresh lime juice into the shaker.
  4. Shake the Cocktail: Shake vigorously until the exterior of the shaker feels cold to the touch, indicating the ingredients are well chilled and mixed.
  5. Serve the Cocktail: Fill rocks glasses with ice and strain the shaken mixture into the glasses. Top each cocktail with a splash of club soda for effervescence.
  6. Garnish and Present: Garnish each drink with a fresh rosemary sprig and a slice of blood orange for an aromatic and visually appealing finish. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • You can substitute regular orange juice if blood oranges are not in season, but the unique flavor and color will be less vibrant.
  • Adjust the amount of simple syrup for your preferred sweetness level.
  • Chill glasses beforehand for an extra refreshing experience.
  • The cocktail can be made in batches by preparing the syrup and mixing larger quantities of gin, syrup, and lime juice ahead of time.
  • For a stronger rosemary flavor, gently bruise the sprigs before simmering in the syrup.
