4.1 from 7 reviews

This simple and elegant caramelized grapefruit recipe transforms a fresh pink grapefruit into a warm, sweet treat with a perfectly crisp, caramelized sugar topping. Using the broiler to quickly brown the sugar brings out the grapefruit’s natural tartness balanced with a rich caramel flavor, making a delightful breakfast or dessert option.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 large pink grapefruit, cut in half
  • 2 tbsp coarse brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat Broiler: Set your oven broiler to high heat to prepare for caramelizing the sugar on the grapefruit.
  2. Prepare Grapefruit: Using a sharp knife, cut the grapefruit in half. Score all around the edge of the fruit’s flesh to loosen it from the skin carefully.
  3. Section the Fruit: Cut along each segment to release the grapefruit sections from the inner membrane, making it easier to eat once caramelized.
  4. Add Brown Sugar: Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of coarse brown sugar evenly onto the exposed flesh of each grapefruit half.
  5. Caramelize Under Broiler: Place the grapefruit halves on a baking sheet and position under the broiler. Broil for 3-5 minutes until the edges brown and the sugar begins to bubble and caramelize.
  6. Cool Slightly: Remove the grapefruit from the broiler and let it sit for about a minute to cool down slightly as it will be very hot.
  7. Serve: Serve the caramelized grapefruit warm on its own, or optionally top with a dollop of fresh whipped cream for added richness.

Notes

  • Keep a close eye on the grapefruit while broiling to prevent burning.
  • Use coarse brown sugar for better caramelization and texture.
  • Freshly whipped cream complements the tartness but is optional.
  • This recipe is quick and perfect for a healthy breakfast or light dessert.
