Classic Spanish Red Sangria is a refreshing and fruity wine punch featuring a blend of red wine, fresh citrus fruits, apple, cinnamon sticks, and topped with soda water. Perfect for gatherings or a relaxing day, this traditional recipe is easy to prepare and bursting with vibrant flavors.

Ingredients

Liquids

  • 1 bottle red wine (preferably a younger wine, low in tannins)
  • 12 oz soda water of choice
  • 2 tbsp sugar or triple sec

Fruit

  • 3 oranges
  • 2 lemons
  • 1 apple

Spices

  • 3 cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. Prep the fruit: Juice two of the oranges and one of the lemons directly into your pitcher. Next, slice the remaining orange and lemon into rounds. Dice the apple into small cubes. Set aside a few slices of the citrus for garnish, then add the remaining sliced citrus and diced apple into the pitcher with the juice.
  2. Mix & chill: Add the bottle of red wine, sugar or triple sec, and the cinnamon sticks to the pitcher containing the fruit and juice. Stir thoroughly to combine all ingredients. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours to allow the flavors to meld and chill.
  3. Finish & serve: When ready to serve, pour the sangria into glasses filled with ice if desired. Garnish with the reserved citrus slices. Top each serving with soda water to add a refreshing fizz and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a sweeter sangria, use triple sec instead of sugar or increase the sugar slightly.
  • Choose a fruit-forward, low-tannin red wine for the best flavor balance.
  • Allowing the sangria to chill for at least 2 hours enhances the infusion of fruit and cinnamon flavors.
  • Soda water adds a pleasant carbonation; alternatively, you can replace it with lemon-lime soda for a sweeter touch.
  • The sangria can be prepared a day ahead; keep refrigerated until serving.
