Ingredients

Meat Sauce

  • 12 Lasagna Noodles, uncooked
  • 1/2 lb Lean Ground Beef
  • 1/2 lb Italian Sausage
  • 1 Onion, diced
  • 2 tbsp Minced Garlic
  • 48 oz Pasta Sauce
  • 1 tsp Italian Seasoning
  • 3/4 tsp Salt
  • 3/4 tsp Pepper

Cheese Mixture

  • 4 cups Shredded Mozzarella Cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup Shredded Parmesan Cheese, divided
  • 1 large Egg, beaten
  • 2 cups Ricotta Cheese
  • 1/4 cup Chopped Parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the lasagna.
  2. Cook Noodles: Prepare the lasagna noodles according to the package directions until al dente. Once cooked, drain and set aside.
  3. Prepare Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef, Italian sausage, diced onion, and minced garlic. Cook, breaking up the meat, until no pink remains. Drain any excess fat.
  4. Simmer Sauce: Add the pasta sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir well and let it simmer for 5 minutes. Then, turn off the heat.
  5. Prepare Cheese Mixture: Freshly shred your cheeses for the best flavor. In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, 1 1/2 cups of shredded mozzarella, 1/4 cup of shredded Parmesan, beaten egg, and chopped parsley. Mix until fully blended.
  6. Grease Baking Dish: Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  7. Assemble First Layer: Spread 1 cup of the meat sauce evenly on the bottom of the dish. Layer 3 lasagna noodles on top of the sauce.
  8. Add Cheese and Sauce Layer: Spread one-third of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles, then top with 1 cup of meat sauce.
  9. Repeat Layers: Repeat the layering process two more times: noodles, ricotta mixture, and meat sauce.
  10. Final Layer: Lay the final 3 noodles on top and cover them with the remaining meat sauce.
  11. Bake Covered: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  12. Top with Cheese: Remove the foil and sprinkle the remaining Parmesan cheese over the lasagna, followed by the remaining mozzarella cheese.
  13. Bake Uncovered: Bake uncovered for about 15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  14. Broil to Finish: Place the lasagna under the broiler briefly to brown the top until it is nicely golden and slightly crisp. Watch carefully to prevent burning.

Notes

  • Freshly shredding the cheese yields better melting and flavor compared to pre-shredded cheese.
  • Make sure to drain the cooked meat to avoid excess grease in the sauce.
  • If noodles are difficult to work with, use no-boil lasagna noodles for convenience.
  • Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes after baking to set the layers before slicing.
  • Adding chopped fresh parsley enhances the flavor and adds a fresh touch.
