This Edible Sugar Cookie Dough recipe offers a safe and delicious way to enjoy classic sugar cookie flavors without baking the dough into cookies. By heat-treating the flour and mixing it with butter, sugar, and vanilla, you get a soft, creamy dough perfect for snacking right from the bowl or serving as a sweet treat. Its simplicity and safety make it an ideal dessert for cookie dough lovers.

Ingredients

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup salted butter, room temperature
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-3 Tablespoons whole milk

Instructions

  1. Heat-treat the flour: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the flour evenly on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake the flour for about 5 minutes or until it reaches 165°F (74°C) to ensure it’s safe to eat. Use an instant-read thermometer to check the temperature, then remove it from the oven and let it cool completely.
  2. Cream butter and sugar: In a stand mixer bowl or a large mixing bowl using a hand mixer, beat the room temperature salted butter and granulated sugar together on medium speed until the mixture is light, fluffy, and well combined. This usually takes around 2-3 minutes.
  3. Combine ingredients: Add the vanilla extract, the cooled, heat-treated flour, and 2 tablespoons of whole milk to the butter-sugar mixture. Mix on low speed until the dough starts coming together into a soft ball. If the dough feels too dry or crumbly, add the remaining tablespoon of milk and mix again until the desired consistency is achieved.
  4. Serve and enjoy: Scoop the edible cookie dough into bowls and enjoy right away as a safe-to-eat treat or store for later consumption.

Notes

  • It’s important to heat-treat the raw flour until it reaches 165°F to eliminate any harmful bacteria and make it safe for raw consumption.
  • Use an instant-read thermometer to ensure the flour reaches the correct temperature.
  • Store the edible cookie dough in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days to maintain freshness.
  • If desired, you can add mix-ins like chocolate chips or sprinkles after mixing, but this recipe does not include them.
