These French Toast Roll-Ups are a fun and delicious twist on traditional French toast, perfect for a quick breakfast or snack. Soft white bread is filled with creamy cream cheese and fresh strawberries or rich Nutella, then dipped in a cinnamon-egg mixture and pan-fried until golden brown. Coated in cinnamon sugar, they offer a perfect balance of crispy, soft, and sweet in every bite.

Ingredients

Bread and Filling

  • 8 slices white sandwich bread
  • Softened cream cheese with diced strawberries OR Nutella with diced strawberries (approximately 1-2 teaspoons filling per roll)

Egg Mixture

  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons milk

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 heaping teaspoon ground cinnamon

For Cooking

  • Butter for greasing the pan (about 1 tablespoon, plus more as needed)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Cut the crust from each slice of bread and flatten each slice using a rolling pin to make it thin and pliable.
  2. Fill and Roll: Place about 1 to 2 teaspoons of your chosen filling (cream cheese with diced strawberries or Nutella with diced strawberries) about 1 inch from one end of the bread slice. Roll the bread up tightly starting from that end. Repeat with all slices.
  3. Mix Egg Mixture: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until fully combined and smooth.
  4. Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: In a separate shallow bowl, mix the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon thoroughly.
  5. Heat the Pan: Place a skillet over medium heat and melt about 1 tablespoon of butter to grease the surface.
  6. Cook the Roll-Ups: Dip each bread roll into the egg mixture, making sure it is well-coated. Place each roll in the hot skillet seam side down. Cook in batches, turning them to brown all sides evenly. Each side should cook for about 2 minutes until golden brown. Add more butter to the pan as needed during cooking.
  7. Coat with Cinnamon Sugar: Immediately after cooking, roll each hot French toast roll-up in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.
  8. Serve: Serve warm, optionally with syrup for dipping, or enjoy them just as they are for a delightful treat.

Notes

  • Use white sandwich bread for best flexibility; fresh bread works better than stale.
  • Filling options include cream cheese with diced strawberries or Nutella with diced strawberries, but feel free to experiment with other spreads or fruits.
  • Cook on medium heat to ensure the rolls cook through without burning.
  • These roll-ups are best served immediately while warm and crispy.
  • Can be a fun and easy breakfast or party snack.
