A simple and flavorful grilled BBQ tofu recipe perfect for a plant-based protein option. The tofu is pressed, sliced, marinated with a date-sweetened barbecue sauce, and grilled to achieve beautiful caramelized grill marks and smoky taste. This recipe is quick, easy, and ideal for a healthy vegan meal or as a protein addition to salads, bowls, and sides.

Ingredients

Tofu

  • 1 block firm tofu, pressed

BBQ Sauce

  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup date-sweetened barbecue sauce (or any BBQ sauce of choice)

Other

  • Wooden or metal skewers (if wooden, soaked in water for 30 minutes)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Grill: Lightly oil the grill grates and preheat to medium heat. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for 30 minutes to prevent burning during grilling.
  2. Slice and Skewer Tofu: Cut the pressed tofu block in half lengthwise, then slice each half into 4 long sticks, making 8 pieces total. Thread each tofu stick onto a skewer lengthwise without puncturing through the top. Using a basting brush, generously coat all sides of tofu with barbecue sauce.
  3. Grill the Tofu: Place the tofu skewers on the grill and cook for about 2 minutes per side until grill marks appear. Monitor closely to prevent burning and reduce heat if necessary. Flip the tofu 4-5 times total, basting with more BBQ sauce each time to caramelize and build flavor.
  4. Serve: Remove the grilled tofu from heat and serve immediately with your favorite sides such as a salad, rice, and beans, or incorporate into a buddha bowl for a delicious and nutritious meal.

Notes

  • Pressing the tofu before grilling helps it absorb more marinade and prevents it from falling apart.
  • Soaking wooden skewers in water prevents them from burning on the grill.
  • Adjust grilling time and heat based on your specific grill to avoid overcooking or burning.
  • Use your favorite BBQ sauce or make a homemade date-sweetened version for healthier options.
  • This tofu can be served as a main or a protein addition to salads and grain bowls.
