This Homemade Flour Tortillas recipe is a simple and authentic way to make soft, pliable tortillas right in your kitchen. Made with basic pantry ingredients like flour, baking powder, salt, olive oil, and warm water, these tortillas are perfect for burritos, tacos, or wraps. The dough is kneaded until smooth, rested to develop texture, then cooked on a hot skillet until beautifully golden with light bubbles, delivering fresh and flavorful tortillas that are easy to customize and enjoy.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon fine salt

Wet Ingredients

  • ¼ cup olive oil (or avocado oil or room temperature unsalted butter)
  • ¾ cup warm water

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt until well blended, creating the base for your tortilla dough.
  2. Add wet ingredients: Pour in the olive oil and warm water, then mix with your hands until the dough begins to form and all the dry flour is incorporated.
  3. Knead the dough: Transfer the dough onto a well-floured surface and knead it for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic, which helps develop the gluten for better texture.
  4. Divide and shape dough: Cut the dough into 8 equal pieces for large tortillas or 10 pieces for medium size. Roll each piece into a smooth ball.
  5. Rest the dough: Place the dough balls on a lightly floured parchment-lined baking sheet, cover them with a clean kitchen towel, and let them rest at room temperature for at least 30 minutes up to 2 hours to relax the dough.
  6. Roll out tortillas: On a floured surface, roll each dough ball into a circle—8 to 10 inches for large and 6 to 8 inches for medium. Keep your surface and rolling pin lightly floured to prevent sticking. Place rolled tortillas on a clean towel or parchment paper without stacking.
  7. Cook tortillas: Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat until very hot. Cook each tortilla for 30-45 seconds until bubbles form, then flip and cook the other side for another 30-45 seconds until golden spots appear.
  8. Keep tortillas warm: Transfer cooked tortillas to a tortilla warmer or place in a plastic zip-top bag to maintain softness and warmth as you finish cooking the rest.
  9. Serve or store: Enjoy immediately or refrigerate for 5-7 days. Reheat before serving to restore softness.

Notes

  • Resting the dough is key for soft tortillas; do not skip this step.
  • Use warm water to help activate the baking powder and soften the dough.
  • Keep your rolling surface and rolling pin floured to avoid sticking.
  • Do not stack tortillas immediately after rolling to prevent sticking.
  • Store tortillas in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
  • Reheat tortillas on a dry skillet or microwave wrapped in a damp towel for best results.
  • You can substitute olive oil with avocado oil or unsalted butter for different flavors.
