A refreshing homemade lemonade recipe made with freshly squeezed lemons, simple syrup, and water. This classic summer drink is easy to prepare, perfectly balanced between sweet and tart, and ideal for serving over ice on a hot day.

Ingredients

For the Simple Syrup

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups water

For the Lemonade

  • 1 1/2 cups fresh lemon juice (about 6-8 lemons)
  • 4 1/2 – 5 cups water, divided (2 1/2 cups cold water to add before serving, remaining for syrup mix)

Instructions

  1. Make Simple Syrup: Combine sugar and 2 cups of water in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a boil while stirring continuously until the sugar completely dissolves. Remove the saucepan from heat and let the syrup cool to room temperature.
  2. Prepare the Lemonade Base: Strain fresh lemon juice through a fine-mesh sieve into a 2-quart pitcher to remove pulp and seeds. Add the cooled simple syrup to the lemon juice and stir well to combine. Refrigerate the mixture until it is cold and ready to serve.
  3. Serve the Lemonade: When ready to serve, add 2 1/2 cups of cold water to the lemon and syrup mixture. Stir thoroughly and taste the lemonade. If it’s too sweet, add more cold water to dilute to your preferred sweetness. Optionally, serve the lemonade over ice for a chilled refreshing drink.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of water added before serving based on your sweetness preference.
  • Use fresh lemons for the best flavor; bottled lemon juice will alter the taste.
  • Simple syrup can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  • Serve with ice cubes to keep the lemonade chilled longer.
  • For a sparkling version, replace some or all of the water with sparkling water.
