This refreshing Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream combines the coolness of peppermint with rich dark chocolate chips for a classic treat. Made with heavy cream and whole milk, this homemade ice cream is creamy, flavorful, and perfectly minty, ideal for a delightful dessert or snack.

Ingredients

Ice Cream Base

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons quality pure vanilla extract
  • 1-2 teaspoons peppermint extract, to taste
  • a few drops natural green (spirulina) food coloring (optional)

Add-ins

  • 3/4 cup miniature dark chocolate chips or chunks
  • waffle cones (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, stir together the heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, kosher salt, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract until the sugar is completely dissolved. If desired, add natural green food coloring in small increments (starting with about 3 drops) to achieve your preferred minty green shade.
  2. Churn the Ice Cream: Pour the mixture into your ice cream maker and operate it following the manufacturer’s instructions. After approximately 20 minutes, when the mixture has thickened to a soft-serve consistency, add the miniature dark chocolate chips or chunks.
  3. Continue Churning: Allow the ice cream maker to churn for an additional 5 to 10 minutes to evenly distribute the chocolate throughout and thicken the ice cream further.
  4. Freeze to Firm Up: Transfer the churned ice cream into a shallow, airtight freezer-safe container. Freeze it for at least 3 to 4 hours until firm; for optimal texture and flavor, freeze overnight.
  5. Serve: Once firm, scoop the ice cream into waffle cones if desired and serve immediately for a classic sweet treat.

Notes

  • You can adjust the amount of peppermint extract to your taste preference for a milder or stronger mint flavor.
  • Using miniature chocolate chips ensures even distribution and pleasant texture.
  • If you do not have natural green food coloring, the ice cream will still have great flavor without the green hue.
  • This recipe makes about 1 quart of ice cream, perfect for 8 servings.
  • Make sure the ice cream maker bowl is fully frozen before starting the churning process for best results.
