This Mulled Apple Cider recipe is a comforting and aromatic beverage perfect for chilly days and festive gatherings. Made by simmering store-bought apple cider with warm spices like cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and orange peel, it fills your home with inviting scents while delivering a deliciously spiced drink. It’s easy to prepare on the stovetop and serves eight people, ideal for sharing warmth and joy.

Ingredients

Mulled Apple Cider Ingredients

  • 1 gallon store-bought apple cider (not apple juice)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 tbsp whole cloves (or to taste)
  • 1 orange peel (cut into strips)
  • 1 star anise whole
  • 1 piece of cheese cloth (optional, for wrapping spices)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Spices: Take the cheesecloth (if using) and place the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and star anise inside. Wrap them securely and tie with kitchen twine to create a spice bundle. If you don’t have cheesecloth, plan to skim the spices out later.
  2. Heat the Cider: Pour the gallon of apple cider into a large stockpot and turn the heat to medium on the stovetop.
  3. Add Spices and Orange Peel: Add the wrapped spice bundle and orange peel strips to the pot with the cider.
  4. Simmer: When you see steam rising from the cider, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently for at least 30 minutes. For a stronger flavor and a cozy home scent, you can keep it simmering for several hours, but watch out for evaporation.
  5. Serve: After simmering, remove the spice bundle or skim out the loose spices if not using cheesecloth. Ladle the mulled cider into mugs and enjoy warm.

Notes

  • Using store-bought apple cider instead of apple juice provides a richer flavor.
  • If you omit the cheesecloth, carefully strain or skim the spices out before serving to avoid any grit.
  • You can adjust the amount of cloves to your taste, as they have a strong flavor.
  • For added sweetness, stir in honey, maple syrup, or brown sugar before serving.
  • Keep the cider covered while simmering to reduce evaporation.
  • Optional garnishes include cinnamon sticks or orange slices in the mugs for presentation.
