Nicaraguan Queso Frito is a deliciously simple fried cheese dish made by pan-frying firm Mexican frying cheese until golden and crispy on the edges. Perfect as a snack or appetizer, this recipe highlights the unique texture and flavor of queso para freir, a special cheese designed to hold its shape during frying. With just a few ingredients and minimal prep, it’s a quick and satisfying treat from Nicaragua.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 package (10 oz) queso para freir (Frying Cheese), sliced into 1-inch thick pieces
  • Vegetable oil or canola oil for frying (enough for shallow frying)

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil: Pour enough vegetable or canola oil into a shallow pan and heat over medium to medium-low heat until hot but not smoking, ideal for frying the cheese gently.
  2. Prepare the cheese slices: Slice the queso para freir into approximately 1-inch thick slices to ensure they hold shape and fry evenly.
  3. Fry the cheese: Carefully place the cheese slices into the hot oil. Fry each side for 2 to 3 minutes, ensuring not to exceed 3 minutes per side to avoid melting or breaking.
  4. Flip the cheese: When the edges of the cheese slices appear lightly golden brown, carefully flip them to fry the other side until similarly golden and crisp.
  5. Drain and serve: Remove the fried cheese from the oil and place on a paper towel–lined plate to drain excess oil. Do not add salt. Let cool slightly and enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • Use authentic queso para freir or frying cheese labeled for frying to ensure it holds shape and does not melt away.
  • Do not overheat the oil to prevent burning the cheese exterior before the inside firms up.
  • Frying time should be carefully monitored; frying too long will cause the cheese to become overly soft or melt.
  • Serve as a snack, appetizer, or alongside dishes like beans and plantains for a traditional Nicaraguan meal.
  • Best enjoyed hot and fresh from the pan for optimal texture and flavor.
