A quick and delicious savory puff pastry filled with ham, mustard, and aged cheese, perfect as a snack or light meal. This recipe creates a golden, crispy pastry pocket with a rich and tangy filling, ready in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Pastry

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry
  • Flour, for rolling

Filling

  • 2 tablespoons mustard
  • 6 thin slices of ham
  • 1 cup grated aged cheese

Topping

  • 1 large egg yolk, beaten

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and gather all your ingredients to have them ready for assembly.
  2. Prepare Dough: On a floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet into a 10-inch square. If you prefer clean edges, trim them neatly with a knife. Brush the entire surface evenly with 2 tablespoons of mustard.
  3. Add Filling: Arrange the 6 thin slices of ham on the bottom half of the dough, slightly overlapping, and leave a 3/4-inch border around the edges. Sprinkle 1 cup of grated aged cheese over the ham, again leaving the same border free for sealing.
  4. Seal Pastry: Fold the top half of the dough over the filling, gently pressing the edges together with your fingers. Crimp the edges with a fork to ensure a tight seal and create a decorative pattern. Transfer the pastry carefully onto a baking sheet.
  5. Apply Egg Wash: Generously brush the entire exposed surface of the pastry with the beaten egg yolk. This will give the pastry a beautiful golden color and shine after baking.
  6. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 17 to 19 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and deeply golden brown.
  7. Cool and Serve: Allow the savory puff pastry to cool for a few minutes to set before slicing into 4 servings and enjoying.

Notes

  • Use aged cheese like cheddar or Gruyère for a richer flavor.
  • Ensure the puff pastry is well chilled before rolling for a flakier crust.
  • Handle the puff pastry gently to prevent it from tearing.
  • You can substitute the ham with turkey or cooked bacon if preferred.
  • Serve warm for the best taste and texture.
