Ingredients

Sloppy Joe Mixture

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 medium green pepper, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon prepared yellow mustard
  • 1 ½ tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ½ cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Buns & Topping

  • 12 slider buns
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • Steak seasoning

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the casserole.
  2. Cook the Meat and Vegetables: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef. About halfway through cooking, add chopped onion and green pepper. Continue cooking for 4-5 minutes until the beef is browned and the vegetables have softened. Drain any excess grease from the skillet. Reduce heat to low and stir in the minced garlic, cooking for 1 minute while stirring constantly to release its aroma.
  3. Prepare the Sloppy Joe Sauce: Stir in apple cider vinegar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, tomato paste, ketchup, BBQ sauce, beef broth, and chili powder into the skillet. Allow the mixture to simmer over low heat for about 15 minutes to meld flavors and thicken slightly. Season with freshly ground black pepper according to your taste preference.
  4. Toast the Slider Buns: Slice the slider buns in half, keeping them connected at the base. Arrange the buns cut-side up on a baking sheet and toast them under the broiler until slightly golden. This adds texture and prevents sogginess in the casserole.
  5. Assemble the Casserole: In a 9×13-inch casserole dish, place the toasted bottom halves of the buns evenly. Spoon the hot sloppy joe mixture evenly over the bun bottoms, then cover with the toasted top halves of the buns.
  6. Butter and Season: Brush the top buns with melted butter and sprinkle steak seasoning generously for added flavor and a golden crust.
  7. Bake: Bake the assembled casserole in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until the buns are toasted golden brown. Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the meat mixture.
  • To make this recipe gluten-free, substitute slider buns with gluten-free rolls.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven for best results.
  • If preferred, ground turkey or chicken can be used as a leaner alternative to ground beef.
  • Adding shredded cheese on top before baking adds a creamy texture and extra flavor.
