This homemade taco seasoning recipe is a quick and easy blend of spices designed to perfectly season 1 pound of taco meat. It combines chili powder, cumin, garlic, and other aromatic spices to create a flavorful and versatile mix that enhances your favorite Mexican-inspired dishes. Ready in just five minutes, this seasoning can be stored for future use in an airtight container.

Ingredients

Spices

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 pinch cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a small bowl, mix together all the spices and cornstarch thoroughly until evenly blended. Transfer this seasoning mix to an airtight container to keep it fresh until you’re ready to use.
  2. Season Meat: When preparing taco meat, cook 1 pound of ground meat in a skillet over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess grease from the cooked meat.
  3. Add Seasoning and Water: Return the cooked meat to the skillet and sprinkle the taco seasoning over it. Pour in 2/3 cup of water. Stir well to combine the meat and seasoning with the water.
  4. Cook to Thicken: Bring the mixture to a boil, allowing it to thicken, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Let it cook for 1 minute while stirring occasionally to ensure the flavors meld and the sauce thickens.
  5. Remove from Heat: After simmering, remove the skillet from heat. Your seasoned taco meat is now ready to be used in tacos, burritos, or other dishes.
  6. Optional Flavor Boost: For added aroma and depth, you can soften diced onions in the skillet before cooking the meat. Also, add 3 cloves of minced garlic immediately after draining the grease for enhanced flavor.

  • Cornstarch acts as a thickening agent to help create a nice sauce with the water added during cooking.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper to taste to control spiciness.
  • Adding onions and garlic is optional but recommended for richer flavor.
  • Use this seasoning for beef, chicken, turkey, or plant-based meat alternatives.
